Motifs
Q. What exactly does the term motif signify in relation to crochet? Is it a particular type of crochet or meant to illustrate a style?
A. A motif in crochet is something that is worked on its own in order to form a design instead of working in rows. For example, a granny square is a motif. The squares or motifs are then joined to form your project. Doilies are another example of motifs. They stand on their own, a design in themselves. Bedspreads and tablecloths are made of motifs, which are later joined to finish the project. Any piece that is worked independently from its own focal point is considered a motif.
