Day Lilies

These exotic flowers are added to the crocheted hexagon blocks like appliques. We arranged the flowers in a circular pattern, but you might want to completely cover your afghan with lilies.

Materials
- Worsted-weight yarn, 45 oz (3150 yds, 1350 gms) off white; 7 oz (490 yds, 210 gms) green; 4 1/2 oz (315 yds, 135 gms) pink, orange, and gold
- Note: Our photographed afghan was made with Red Heart® Classic™, Off White #3, Seafoam Green #684, Pale Rose #744, Medium Coral #252, and Honey Gold #645.
- Size J (6mm) crochet hook, or size required for gauge
- Size G (4.25mm) crochet hook
- Size 16 tapestry needle

- 3 sc = 1"
Instructions
Motif (make 53): With larger size hood and off white, ch 6; join to form a ring.
- Rnd 1 (right side): Ch 3 {counts as a dc on this and following rnd}, 17 dc in
ring; join in 3rd ch of beg ch-3 -- 18 dc. - Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in same ch as joining; 2 dc in each rem dc; join in
3rd ch of beg ch-3 -- 36 dc. - Note: Remainder of motif is worked in joined rows.
- Row 1: Ch 1, sc in same ch as joining and in next 4 dc, ch 3, sk next dc; * sc in next 5 dc, ch 3, sk next dc; rep from * 4 times more; join in first sc -- 6 ch-3 sps. Ch 3 {counts as first dc on following rows}, turn.

Lilies (make 10 pink, 10 orange, and 8 gold)
- Top Half: With smaller size hook, ch 4; join to form a ring.
- Foundations Rnd (right side): Ch 1, 9 sc in ring; join in BL of first sc.
First Petal:
- Row 1: Ch 1, 2 sc in same lp; working in BLs only, 2 sc in each of next 2 sc -- 6 sc. Ch 1, turn, leaving rem sc unworked.
- Row 2: Sc in first 2 sc, 2 sc in each of next 2 sc; sc in next 2 sc -- 8 sc. Ch 1, turn.
- Row 3: Sc in each sc. Ch 1, turn.
- Row 4: Rep Row 3.
- Row 5: Dec over first 2 sc {to work dec: draw up lp in 2 sc indicated, YO and draw through all 3 lps on hook -- dec made}; sc in next 4 sc, dec over next 2 sc -- 6 sc. Ch 1, turn.
- Row 6: Dec over first 2 sc; sc in next 2 sc, dec -- 4 sc. Ch 1, turn.
- Rows 7 and 8: Rep row 3.
- Row 9: Dec twice -- 2 sc. Ch 1, turn.
- Row 10: Rep row 3.
- Row 11: Dec. Ch 1, turn.
- Row 12: Sc in next sc. Finish off.
Second Petal:
Join in BL of next unused sc on Foundation Rnd to left of First Petal. Work same as First Petal.
Third Petal:
Join in BL of next unused sc on Foundation Rnd to left of Second Petal. Work same as First Petal.
Bottom Half
Using smaller size hook, ch 4; join to form a ring.
- Rnd 1 (right side): Ch 1, 9 sc in ring; join in first sc.
- Rnd 2: Ch3 {counts as a dc}, dc in same sc; 2 dc in each rem sc; join in 3rd ch of beg ch-3 -- 18 dc.
First Petal
- Row 1: Ch 1, 2 sc in same ch as joining; working in BLs only, 2 sc in each of next 2 dc -- 6 sc. Ch 1, turn, leaving rem dc unworked.
- Row 2 through 12: Rep Rows 2 through 12 of First Petal of Top Half.
Second Petal: Sk next 3 unused dc to left of First Petal; join in BL of next dc. Work same as First Petal of Bottom Half.
Third Petal: Sk next 3 unused dc to left of Second Petal; join in BL of next dc. Work same as Second Petal of Bottom Half. Finish off and weave in all ends.
Leaf (make 168)
With smaller size hook and green, ch 12; sc in 2nd ch
from hook, hdc in next ch, dc in next 2 chs, trc in next
3 chs, dc in next 2 chs, hdc in next ch, sc in next ch.
Finish off, leaving a 12" end for sewing.
Weave in rem end.
Lily Motif Assembly
Referring to Photo A for placement, sew six leaves to
one motif. Referring to Photo B, sew bottom half of one
lily to center of motif; tack end of each petal to Row 3 of
motif. Referring to Photo C, sew matching top half over
bottom half, positioning top half petals between petals of
bottom half; tack end of each petal to Row 2 of motif.
Repeat with remaining leaves and lilies.
Afghan Assembly
Referring to Layout for placement,
join motifs together.
To join, hold two motifs with
right sides together and carefully
matching stitches. With tapestry
needle and off white, sew
with overcast stitch {see Stitch
Guide} through BLs only along
one side, beginning and ending
in ch-2 sp of corners. Join
remaining motifs in same manner,
being sure all corner junctions
are firmly joined.
Border
Hold afghan with right side facing
you and one short end at
top; with larger size hook, join
green in ch-2 sp at top of first
motif in upper right-hand corner
